Little stories between us about emigrants from the Aravis in the world (extract from the book « Emigrants de la vallée de Thônes dans le monde » written by “les amis du Val de Thônes”):
« Departure for Paris and arrival in the capital: for centuries, people from Manigod have left their native country in order to seek their livelihood. They were men and women, of all ages, but most of them were young men (less than twenty years old) and young couples with or without children, who left their country on foot. At the end of nineteenth century, departures dramatically increased thanks to railway and most of those who left their country were going to Paris…As soon as he arrived in the capital, the emigrant was welcomed with open arms either by family members or by other Savoyards from the Aravis. Mutual aid was very efficient and several families told me that in their small parisian flat they had arranged an alcove to be able to accomodate the passing Savoyard. He could thus stay here before finding a job and his own accomodation ».
